Events

DOCOMOMO NZ and the HT Hub present, “The Adaptive Reuse of the CIT Campus, Heretaunga, for the NZ Campus of Innovation and Sport (NZCIS),” a Zoom talk by Geoff Glynan, Architecture HDT – Tuesday 12 August 2025, 12 noon to 1 p.m. NZ time.

Renowned for its expressive Brutalist forms and bush-hammered concrete surfaces, the former Central Institute of Technology campus in Heretaunga has been transformed for use by the New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport (NZCIS), a high performance sports institute. The project made the cover of the Winter 2025 issue of Heritage New Zealand, with the magazine describing it as “one of the largest and most impressive examples of adaptive reuse in the country.” It was a big part of architect Geoff Glynan’s life for almost ten years. In this talk, he discusses the aims and objectives behind the adaptive reuse project and some of the challenges and complexities encountered along the way. Geoff is a Wellington-based Director at Architecture HDT.
